Discover what coaching is… and what it is not.

And why the best performing leaders and teams have a coach.

Coaching is…

… a secret weapon the best performers use to get the most out of themselves. Just as the best athletes and teams in the sports world have a great coach, so do those in the corporate world. But corporate coaching is very misunderstood.

The International Coaching Federation, the gold standard of coaching, defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Coaching is a forward and results focused process that helps clients discover the unique answers within them. A corporate coach will guide you through the process of both thoughtfully exploring your challenges as well as discovering the answers to those challenges that are already inside you.

Coaching is not…

Therapy. Training. Consulting. Your coach telling you what to do.

Coaching is not exploring the past and examining why things happened. Nor is it finding the root cause of problems.

Unlike coaches in the sports world, executive and corporate coaches do not tell you what to do, how to think, or how to approach problems. They guide you through the process of discovering those answers for yourself.

What to expect in a coaching session?

In a coaching session, be prepared to be asked a lot of questions. A lot. But as the client, you are in charge of the conversation. You determine what problem you’d like help finding answers for in any given coaching session.

You essentially start each session at “zero” and you’ll be free to explore any current or future challenge you’d like. Just don’t expect answers to come from anywhere else but you. At the beginning of the session you and your coach agree on the topic to explore that day as well as the goals for the session, then the coach will ask you questions to help you see your challenges in a new light. And as a result, help you see new and better solutions to your challenges—solutions that will drive real results because they’ll be your solutions.

Each coaching session lasts anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes and can happen at a frequency that you and your coach agree upon. Every week? Every other week? Once a month? Sure, why not?
